Author's Note:
This is the kind of controversy and conflicting information that I ran into when I was diabetic and doing research on Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. My endocrinologist told me that I have to remain on insulin for the rest of my life. He said that eating better won't hurt, but he said that food was not as strong as the insulin and other drugs that I was taking; and, therefore, would not do much to stop the progression of my diabetes. It would just be a matter of time before I would have to face leg amputation, blindness, kidney failure and a possible heart attack or stroke.
Because of all the conflicting information, I decided to educate myself about cell biology, pathology, epidemiology and several other medical sciences so that I could learn how diabetes actually develops in the human body. I felt that once I truly understood diabetes at the cellular level, I could better design an alternative strategy and nutritional program that was safe and effective.
At that time, I didn't really expect that I could wean off the insulin 100%. I was hoping that I could, at least, reduce the number of daily insulin shots from 4 to 3 or maybe 2. Needless to say, I was overjoyed when I was able to wean off all the insulin within 3.5 months and the other drugs within another 3 months. But, my endocrinologist told me that I would be back on insulin within 3 months .. then, it was 6 months ... then, it was 9 months ... well, it's been over 10 years now and I'm still don't require any insulin or any other drug for that matter.
Because of my experience with diabetes, doctors, hospitals and drugs, I encourage you to educate yourself as much as possible about cancer, diabetes or whatever disease you have. Once I acquired the knowledge, I knew what specific questions to ask my doctors. I also realized from some of their answers, that they were limited in their knowledge about nutrition and alternative therapies.
In addition, the knowledge that I acquired (and continue to acquire) helped with healthcare professionals involved in alternative medicine. I learned that there are quite a few people involved in alternative care who know very little about medical science -- some of them tend to rely on pseudo science.
I know -- this can be very frustrating, trying to figure out who to listen to or to follow for advice. But, the more you learn, the easier all of this becomes.
FYI: Here are a couple videos of me -- one discussing my recovery and the other discussing my endocrinologist who thought that I was in denial:
